Thomas Maxwell Scholarship

Description

The Thomas Maxwell Scholarship supports graduating SWD seniors with demonstrated financial need who show leadership, resilience, and community impact. Applicants submit a 3–5 minute video sharing their SWD experience, future goals, challenges overcome, and advice for future Panthers

This scholarship honors students who embody the spirit of perseverance, growth, and Panther pride while preparing to take the next step toward their educational or career goals.

Eligibility

 Applicants must:

• Be a graduating senior at Southwest DeKalb High School

• Have been accepted to a college, university, trade school, or technical program

• Plan to enroll in the fall following graduation

• Demonstrate leadership, character, and community involvement

• Be in good academic and disciplinary standing

Application Requirements

 Applicants must submit:

• Completed scholarship application

• Proof of acceptance to a college, university, trade school, or technical program with plans to   enroll this fall

• One letter of recommendation (teacher, counselor, employer, or community leader)

• Video submission (replaces traditional essay)

Video Submission

 Applicants will submit one video (maximum 5 minutes) addressing all four prompts:

1. The SWD Impact

How has your experience at Southwest DeKalb High School shaped the person you are today?

2. Purpose & Future Impact

What career path are you pursuing, and how do you hope to use it to positively impact others?

3. Overcoming Challenges

Describe a challenge you faced during high school and how you overcame it. What did the experience teach you?

4. Advice to the Next Panther

If you could give one piece of advice to a freshman entering SWD, what would it be?

Video Guidelines

• Maximum length: 5 minutes

• Student must appear on camera

• Recording with a phone or camera is acceptable

• Videos should reflect the student’s authentic voice and personal experience

• Production quality is not required — sincerity and clarity matter most

Award Amounts

 This year, the scholarship will award up to two students:

• Top Award: $1,000 – for the student whose video demonstrates exceptional leadership, character, and vision

• Second Award: $500 – for a student who also demonstrates strong leadership, resilience, and commitment to the SWD community

Both awards honor students who embody Panther pride, perseverance, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their school and community.
